President Obama signed into law a bill to award a Congressional Gold Medal to the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). The WASP were started in World War II to fly non-combat military missions in the United States. More than 1,000 women joined the WASP from 1942 to 1943. Three of the pilots, Elaine Danforth Harmon, Lorraine H. Rodgers and Bernice Falk Haydu, watched President Obama sign the bill awarding them and their fellow pilots the Congressional Gold Medal.
