A variety of industries were represented in these appointments, with some concentration in technology and media and marketing.

January07 - A New Year, A New Approach for Our Favorite Women

In 2007 we are adding to our five favorite women category companies making important appointments for women. January proved to be an interesting month with promotions and appointments in Finance and Media leading the way. Lisa Binder, appointed President of Associated Banc-Corp, was one of our top searches. Other financial companies promoting or appointing women in January included Capital One, First Republic and UBS Securities. I thought it was great to see Marge Magner (former CEO of Citigroup's Global Consumer Group) co-found a Private Equity Group. Media and Technology were also of particular interest to me with Joanna Shields made President International for Bebo, Susanne Bowen made CEO of mobile media Nellymoser, and Audrey Dunning made CEO for Summa Technologies. Clorox, General Electric, and American Airlines are some of the major corporations who promoted or appointed women to major positions this month. Much more can be found in the posts on Newsonwomen, so take a minute and review the month.

December a Month of Moving Up!

Our Favorite Women as of January 1,07 reflect the achievements of women in business in 2006, when women moved into CEO, CFO, EVP and other Senior positions at major companies across the board. Susan Decker, the CFO of Yahoo who was made Head of the Advertising and Publisher Group in a major reorganization at Yahoo, was our number one search. Wei Christianson, who was made Head of China for Morgan Stanley early in the year, was number two. Angela Ahrendts, who was made CEO of Burberry's during the year was number three. Other women were given added responsibility at major corporations in the month of December, including Cathie Lesjak at HP, Mary Jane Hellyar at Kodak, Gale Tedhams at Owens Corning, and Linda Gooden at Lockheed to name a few.

Looking back over 2006, Wei Christianson of Morgan Stanley was our most popular search having appeared in our top five searches eight out of the last twelve months. Angela Ahrendts, CEO of Burberry, was right behind her. Finance, Retailing and Technology were the industries most represented through the year on our favorite women list. Morgan Stanley had the highest concentration, with three different women appearing on the list over the twelve months. News Corp and GE followed with two each.

There are so many women who have achieved great success this past year, I hesitate to try and decide what were the most important events for women in business in 2006 posted on newsonwomen.com. So I send my congratulations to all of them, and to those about whose achievements we never heard. Looking forward to 2007, I can only repeat what I said the last time I reviewed our progress. I hope for more CEO and Board appointments for women in 2007, more startups and promotions, more job opportunities. I hope more young women study math and science, and women in education and the arts get more recognition. Let's get out there and do some tipping!

Happy New Year!

Favorite Women as of December 1,06

As the year draws to  a close, some familiar names stay at the top of our most searched for Wei_1 women on the Five Favorite Women List of Newsonwomen.com. Wei Christianson, Head of China for Morgan Stanley (pictured left - image borrowed from law.columbia.edu), moves back into the number one spot. Angela Ahrendts, CEO of Burberry, is the second most popular search. Christina Norman, President of MTV, Gretchen Carlson, one of the Women Anchors at Fox News, and Kay Krill, CEO of Ann Taylor, round out the top five. November saw a number of women move into the senior executive ranks of major corporations with more than ten women made Senior or Executive Vice Presidents, President, or CEO of a Division or a Company. These women work in a variety of industries including finance, technology, and retailing. Companies promoting or appointing women this month included Herbalife, Microsoft, Comcast, Daimler Chrysler and Saks. Read about their individual stories by scrolling through Newsonwomen.com.

The Women of Fox Lead the Way as of Nov1,06

The Women of Fox take the top two positions of our November1,06 list of the names searched for by viewers of NewsonWomen.com, with Martha MacCallum beating out Gretchen Carlson for the number one spot. CEO's of companies created additional interest with Kay Krill, CEO of Ann Taylor, Angela Ahrendts, CEO of Burberry, and Anne Stevens, the newly appointed CEO of Carpenter Technologies, all attracting readers.

In fact, six women were appointed as CEO's of major companies in the month of October. Women continued to rise up the ranks as 8 took over as President of Divisions for major companies or as President of the companies themselves; and seven women took over as CFO's at still more big name corporations. This, coupled with the record number of women appointed to Boards in October, makes October a month to remember and contines to feed my feeling that we are reaching a tipping point for women in business. So keep up the tipping by recommending women for executive jobs when you have the chance.
