29 Women were appointed to seats on the Board of Directors of companies in December, 2011 as reported on NewsonWomen.com, which is significantly higher than the 16 reported in November, 2011. Major companies appointing women to Boards in December included Warnaco, who appointed Helen McCluskey its President and Chief Executive Officer, and a member of its Board of Directors. Also appointing women to Board positions were Pfizer, Abbott Labs, ADP, Puget Energy, Starbucks, U.S. Bancorp, Cooper Tire & Rubber, Eli Lilly, John Deere, Philip Morris International, iRobot, Seagate Technology, Maidenform and Eastman Chemical.
This year represents a record number of women appointed to corporate boards in the U.S.
NewsonWomen reports a total for the year of 293 women appointed to Boards, over 30% higher than the 2010 total. A number of these women were appointed to companies and subsidiaries, which would increase the total to over 300 if you included both boards for these women. I counted the number of women (293) rather than the number of boards (over 300). In either case, it shows women making progress on corporate board seat appointments.
