2009 was filled with challenges, but these challenges also created opportunities. Over thirty women were made CEO's in 2009, many of these CEO jobs in media. As the financial system put itself back together, JPMorgan Chase appointed Mary Callahan Erdoes (pictured) CEO of their Asset Management business, Nationwide appointed J. Lynn Greenstein President of Nationwide Bank, the Hartford Financial Services Group appointed Lizabeth Zlatkus their Chief Risk Officer, and Morgan Stanley appointed Ruth Porat their Chief Financial Officer.
Many businesses turned to women for their marketing expertise, choosing women for the Chief Marketing Officer slots at Frito-Lay, Jamba Juice Company, Bloomberg L.P., Sealy Corporation, The Travelers Companies, Jones Apparel, CA, Inc., Neiman Marcus, Cincinnati Bell Inc, Starbucks and more. Businesses also turned to women for their financial skills appointing over thirty women Chief Financial Officer, at companies like Duke Energy, Hasbro, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Virgin America, and Public Service Enterprise Group, the New Jersey energy company.
Elinor Ostrom won her 2009 Nobel Prize for Economics by challenging commonly held opinions. With the start of a new year and a new decade, women will continue to challenge the old way of doing things and take on new opportunities just like the many women featured in 2009.
