Michelle Duguid, PhD, Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior at Olin Business School at Washington University St Louis and author of “Female Tokens in High-prestige Work Groups: Catalysts or Inhibitors of Group Diversification?”, believes women do not do enough to help each other get ahead. Her research shows that one woman, as a token, can feel threatened and does not necessarily support adding more women to her group. Another common reaction, Duguid says, is that the token woman feels she will be thought of as showing favoritism to a woman candidate and therefore doesn't necessarily support her.
