40 women were appointed Boards of Directors in June 2012 and reported on NewsonWomen, beating the 31 appointed in May 2012 and 50% ahead of June, 2011! Major companies appointing women to Boards included International Paper, who appointed to its Board of Directors Ilene S. Gordon (pictured), the Chairman, President and CEO of Ingredion Inc, (Corn Products International). Also naming women to their Boards were Under Amour, Athenahealth, Facebook, Owens Corning, Blackrock, Bunge, Ryder Systems, Chrysler, MBIA, Booz Allen, General Dynamics, Apollo Group, Coca Cola Enterprises, and Sara Lee.
The last six months of appointments looks like a who's who of American business. Could corporate America be getting the message? The numbers indicate yes. At almost 200, Board appointments of women are about 40% ahead of the first six months of last year. Even Facebook, the king of social media, realized that women were essential to its business and added Sheryl Sandberg, its COO, to its Board. Businesses should take a serious look at their Boards to make sure they reflect all aspects of their business and include a high percentage of women. One or two women on the board is no longer acceptable. Gender equality is essential for continued profitability and market share.
